In our fast-paced design industry, color trends change each year, each season, and even within each design style.  Remember, for example, the chartreuse greens, vivid oranges, and bright yellows that have been so popular over the recent years.  Only a short time before that neutrals were all the rage.  Décor has such a fickle heart.  There will always be two colors, however, that will never go out of style – the two extremes of the color spectrum – black and white.  It’s hard to go wrong when combining these colors, but by keeping these three tips in mind, you’ll be sure to take a great look to a sophisticated level.

Tip #1 – As I mentioned before, black and white represent the extremes of the color spectrum.  This means that the greatest color contrast is achieved by placing the two adjacent to each other.  It is important to use this contrast carefully as a point of visual interest, rather than an accidental cause of disorientation.  A good rule of thumb is to focus on a single, large, contrasting pattern as a focal point ad solids or small-scaled patters as complements to the main pattern.

Tip #2 – Incorporating texture will dictate the type of atmosphere generated by the space.  When any contrasting colors are used as the dominant color scheme, a small can quickly become too austere.  By using fabrics or furniture pieces that integrate different textures, you can create a welcoming or even cozy environment.  Try using a solid-colored wool throw, side tables made of heavily distressed wood, or furniture that is upholstered in a velvet or slubbed linen.  Using a visual texture will also achieve this effect; for example, using a countertop like marble with many veins running through it.  Keeping this tip in mind will not only determine the atmosphere of the space, but it will also affect the overall style.  A few, well-selected textures will create a sophisticated look, while using many similar textures can create a very cozy feeling.

Tip #3 – While black and white on their own will always be in style, a great way to keep up with the latest color crazes is to integrate a small accent color within a beautiful black and white palette.  This idea also makes updating a look simple and fast.  Purchasing a white, leather bench is an investment that will last for the life of your space.  Purchasing an orange or yellow accent pillow to place on the bench will create an updated look until the color trends change, the season changes, or you simply want a new look in your space.
